Meet the Author Blog by Diana and Emily

Welcome to Diana and Emily's first blog. We are both students at the Center of Urban Education, and we are currently taking a Intro to Literature class. Throughout this course Dr. Robinson uses techniques in which help us connect to literature in unique ways. For example, as students we participate in literature circles, novel studies, poetry, and in this project, a "meet the author" blog. These assignments are unique to us as students because it involves active thinking and helps us connect with literature. Unlike other standard college courses, Dr. Robinson makes a conscious effort in developing this course. She wants it to be about her students and our connection to literature. Exploring different genres has helped us to find deeper meanings and understanding literature.
For this particular assignment we have chosen Barbara Kingsolver as our, "meet the author." Barbara Kingsolver is an American novelist, essayist, and poet. It is through this assignment of creating a blog that we have learned who Barbara Kigsolver is, her notable works, and about her writing. Please feel free to take a look at the work that we have accomplished and share with us your thoughts and feelings.

  1. This is a well pieced together blog it captures and I enjoyed the part about her political writings. I wonder with her political view if she has ever had book banned due to their content and views on certain issues?

  3. So brave of you all to take on the "page adding" of the blog process. I enjoyed reading your blog. It is very well organized and the life of this author sounds like a person I would like to know. I have never read any of her works and I will be exploring more about her. Thank you for your hard work!

  4. "The very least you can do in you life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance, but live right in it, under its roof." -Barbara Kingsolver

  5. Great introduction. I love how there is a home page about the people putting together the blog. Its nice to know sometimes a little about the people who are introducing material. I like to way thengs are put together on this blog. Very colorful and great choice of background. I am very sad to say though that i am not a politcial person and i would probably never pick up one of her books. But I am sure they are great for the poeple who enjoy politics. I must say though she is very brave writing about such a itchy topic. But good for her, someone has to do it! Great job.

  6. I personally rather read non fiction books/stories than fiction, so I am glad i have learned about Kingsoler. Now I am excited to read one of her books since she has won many awards for creative non fiction.

  7. It's admirable that her passion was writing even throughout elementary school. Her entering even essay contest, when other students probably didn't really care. A passion's a passion.

  9. I enjoyed reading about Barbara Kingsolver,a bright author who never thought of her self as an author at the beginning of her career. She focused many of her wrtings on social injustices, political, cultural, class and economics on top of being a Biology Professor. She can interpret strong wording from biotech labs and epidemiology in lay mans terms. She comes from a well rounded family and lives a life of outdoor beauty. I love that she is very family oriented and seems to have a nice balance of doing what she loves as well as family! Nice job! I liked that you both added information about yourselves. Great job Emily and Diana.

  10. I think it would be interesting to read some of Kingsolver's work, now that I've read this blog. Some of her quotes are really great. I LOVE the quote that has a part saying "tasting the insides of words." That just brings a whole new meaning and almost a nastagia to reading and writing.
