Meet the Author

A writer named Barbara Kingsolver is born in 1955, in the city of Annapolis, Maryland. At age two her family moved to rural east-central Kentucky, where she had the pleasure of having a care free childhood. The meadows became her playground where her siblings and she were able to have adventures and catch wild animals. In elementary school she would enter every essay contest. Her first published work, "Why We Need a New Elementary School," lead Kingsolver to the realization of the gift she beholds.
Although, Kingsolver did not have aspirations of becoming a professional author she would "nurture a private passion for writing," on the side of majoring in Biology, at DePauw University. It was after she had received a Master's degree, she would move to Arizona to take a job as a scientific writer at the University of Arizona. She would not only write for the University but after hours she would take on assignments for  newspapers and magazines. It was at this time that Kingsolver came to the realization that "writing" could pay the bills. By 1985, she would follow her secret passion and become a freelance writer.

Kingsolver is a mother of two daughters Camille (1987) and Lily (1996). She is an active citizen in her community and is very passionate in making a change by being actively involved and through her writing. It's evident through Kingsolver's writing and actions that readers and those around her get a since of the passionate and caring person Kingsolver is.
